May Fitzpatrick

Psychodynamic Psychotherapist

Whatever your personal experience, psychotherapy can help you develop greater self-awareness and a deeper understanding of your relationship with others, face some difficult thoughts and feelings, feel less overwhelmed by your concerns and fears, and support you in making choices and decisions.

It may be that problems have been building up over time but have started to feel unmanageable, or something has happened that seems impossible to adjust to.  You may have noticed that you are having problems in personal or work relationships, or that your feelings about yourself are getting you down on a daily level.  Often, people are struggling with confusing and overwhelming feelings and thoughts that they do not feel they understand or can manage well.

Therapy offers a relationship that is empathetic, non-judgemental and focused on understanding your individual experience.  It provides a safe and confidential space where you can share what is troubling you and explore how this is linked to your past and present circumstances.  It provides a opportunity to think with someone about what is the underlying cause of distress, develop insight and about how to make changes that will enable you to better cope with the challenges present in your life.

My Approach

Deciding to speak with someone professional about problems in your life can often feel like quite a big step to take and it is common for people to feel quite hesitant or unsure about it.

In psychodynamic therapy, the relationship that is built with the therapist becomes instrumental itself in understanding how we interact with ourselves and others.  It is well researched that whatever the type of therapy that people engage with, the quality of the relationship that is built with the therapist is often the best indicator of outcome.

To help with this, in the first instance, I offer a free informal phone call to discuss your concerns and see if I might be the right person for you to work with.  If appropriate, I would then invite you to have a formal consultation session(s) before setting up regular therapy sessions on either a brief or open-ended basis.  I offer in person sessions in Guildford and Weybridge and also remote sessions via zoom.
